Repeating Courses Policy

Students who are meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress may take a required course up to three times, but only at regular tuition rates. An expired course does not count as an attempted course for the purpose of this policy. In order to progress in their program, a student must repeat any courses they failed or withdrew from the next time the course is offered. No course can be repeated within the same quarter/term in which it was most recently attempted. Students who are not meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress may take a required course a maximum of two times, but only at regular tuition rates.

Repeated course credits may be included in financial aid award calculations when:

  • The student is taking a course for a second or third time, and only failing or withdrawn grades have been earned in any previous attempts of that course. Leave of Absence grades (WX for Medical Leave and WL for Military Leave) are excluded from this requirement, OR
  • The student is repeating a previously passed course (this is applicable one time only per previously passed course) for a higher grade. In this case, if the student fails or withdraws from the previously passed course or earns a lower passing grade than what was earned on the first attempt, the highest passing grade will apply, and the student loses all future financial aid eligibility for that course.

Students who are meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress and fail or withdraw from a required course a total of three times may be able to switch to another program that does not include the course as a required part of the program curriculum without going through the program transfer appeal process. Students who fail or withdraw from a course a total of three times, and who cannot switch to another program as determined by the program transfer appeal process, will be withdrawn from the University. The student cannot return to the University and enroll in a program that requires the unsuccessfully attempted course until an equivalent course is completed elsewhere by earning a grade of C- or higher or equivalent, and transfers it back into Rasmussen University as official transfer credit, in accordance with the transfer of credit requirements.

Developmental Education courses may only be repeated once. Students who fail or withdraw from a Developmental Education course a second time (UX or WX grades) will be withdrawn from the University. Refer to the Developmental Education Courses policy regarding scheduling requirements.

All attempts of repeated courses remain on academic records and transcripts, regardless of the earned grade, even though the grade may not be included in the GPA calculation. Students should be aware that graduate schools and other institutions to which they might wish to transfer may not accept repeats and may include all grades in calculating GPA for admission. The academic record for a student in Graduate or Withdrawn status is complete and final. No changes will be made unless there is a documented clerical error, and previously passed course(s) cannot be retaken to improve cumulative Graduate GPA.

Refer to the Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy for details on how repeated and transferred courses will impact a student’s academic and financial status.
