Undergraduate NanoCert® in Battalion Chief

Program Description

The NanoCert entitled Battalion Chief prepares students to understand the responsibilities, duties, and roles of a Battalion Chief. The undergraduate NanoCert, Battalion Chief, is a three-course program that focuses on the responsibilities of the role in mitigating emergencies by the effective and responsive management of man-made and natural disasters including hazardous materials that threatens the safety of the public.

NanoCert Objectives

After successfully completing this NanoCert, the student will be able to:

  • Describe the functional areas, define the various terms, and list the responsibilities involved within an incident command system.
  • Recognize and list the concepts of command structure, lines of authority, and the incident command system.
  • Examine the importance of teamwork among individuals & agencies in achieving the success of the operation at risk.
  • Evaluate the hazmat laws, regulations, and standards on the local, State, and Federal levels.
  • Participate meaningfully in the process of planning, organizing, and training for response to hazmat/terrorist incidents.
  • Develop an incident command organizational structure for a hazmat response using the guidelines set forth in the National Incident Management System (NIMS).
  • Examine how fundamental changes in fire service culture, attitudes, and behaviors affect firefighter safety and survival.
  • Assess how to obtain and apply technology for use in firefighter apparatus and equipment.
